German Television and radio company commissions conversion specialists to convert their microfilm records into electronic format

Date: 23/06/2008

Television and radio company WDR proposed a tender for the conversion of microfilm records from 1986 to 1988. This included roughly 17.000 microfilm reels which contained around 130,000 documents that had to be electronically converted. Cologne based Reprographics company DRS Digitale was eventually chosen to carry out the work using their in-house DRS Digitizer software.

The software in action:
The software used by DRS was the clincher in the deal and it quickly backed up the reliability and speed originally promised by DRS. It eliminated the labour involved and time spent on manually sorting the reels and documents. With its fully automated batch processing the reels were digitised and then indexed and matched to WDR’s existing database. Any data which didn’t require processing was filtered out and deleted. Any left over files were sent to WDR who decided how they should be dealt with, these were sent over to WDR within 8 hours who could organise them as required.

This software suitably catered for the requirements of WDR who believed they had completed the project in a time frame shorter than expected. They were one of many companies who can vouch for the quality service of the software.

Other authorities in Germany as well as the US Department of Defence and Canadian Pensions Insurance Institutions have also used the software. It comes down to the futuristic flat chip technology which feeds the film in and converts large amounts of analogue microfiche/film into different formats of data. DRS are currently expanding their service centre and promoting the DRS Digitale software further.
