From micro to mega Taking care of microfilm and microfiche demands

Date: 02/04/2008

American based company Microfacs has recently increased its company capacity significantly to deal with the heavily increasing customer demands for scanning of microfilm, microfiche and paper documents to a digital format.

Microfacs Inc. of Minneapolis, Minnesota has now increased in size, staff, hardware and workloads due to the sudden influx of requirements now that many industries have begun the process of converting all of their archived microfilm and microfiche into electronic data.

Specifically the company has now added a third shift, bringing them to a full 24 hour 7 day per week operation. They have recently purchased various scanning equipment to cope with the bulk orders, including a KIP Large Format Scanner and 4 Sunrise Microfilm Production Scanners. The rise this demand is mainly due to large contracts established with local governments, insurance companies and title companies. The main focus of the work is on archiving company hard copy records into a digital format for easier management.

The president of Microfacs Rick Romens explained that it was government agencies and insurance companies in particular who had realized the long term advantages and benefits of converting archived records into electronic format. This may even be considered necessary in the future by any companies who keep an astronomical amount of records.

The advantages of this conversion of paper, microfilm and microfiche to digital formats effectively ensures safe storage and efficient retrieval. Once archives are converted into an electronic format, a document can virtually be stored forever with out risk of damage or corruption.

Microfilm and microfiche records can prove time consuming to use when searching through to find a specific document among the mass of slides. The digital conversion gives a text searchable facility to locate the required document much more efficiently.
