Microsoft Sharepoint for Document management
Date: 10/06/2009
Microsoft Sharepoint is the fast up and coming document management system around the world today and more offices are taking this on board. Recent survey results announced at the Info Ireland Online event by AIIM Europe show that 58% of Irish businesses are considering using MOSS (Microsoft Office SharePoint Services) for their document and records management within the next two years, the only snag is that only 19% of these have a formal plan outlining how and where and how it will be implemented.
This survey goes into more detail to show that 23% of Irish organisations plan to convert their data into a single centralised ECMS (Enterprise Content Management System) however 42% plan to leave current multiple storage areas in place and instead provide a sign-in portal area to link these together. From these numbers, over half plan to use SharePoint as the linking system. EDMS (Enterprise Document Management Systems) are becoming increasingly in demand as organisation look to electronically archive all documents and streamline their office processes.
AIIM Europe's Managing Director Douglas Miles highlights the fact that 16% of Irish organisations have already implemented some aspects of Microsoft SharePoint 2007. "Users are keen to compare its functionality with more established ECM solutions, particularly in specific vertical markets. They also want to know how to integrate it with scanning and capture lifecycle storage and legacy repositories" said Miles. By integrating these all-in-one systems organisations hope to eliminate the manual side of document and data processing.
More survey results from the AIIM are available on the Info Ireland Online website, this site also offers a SharePoint Clinic to answer ECM-related questions, and a resource library of case studies along with user guides.
